چکیده

In a previous investigation conducted in this laboratory (1) a starch polysaccharide, apparently identical with the watersoluble component of the common cereal and tuber starches, was isolated from the woody tissue of the apple tree (Malus malus). Thus it appears that starches of widely different origin may contain a common water-soluble polysaccharide. Through an application of the method (2) used above a crude starch polysaccharide was obtained from the leaf tissue of the apple tree (Malus malus), which was separated into a watersoluble and a water-insoluble fraction. The water-soluble fraction was an amorphous white powder, [cy]:’ = +172”, which reacted with aqueous iodine-potassium iodide to give a blue color that disappeared on heating and reappeared on cooling. As this material contained minor quantities of erythrodextrin and pentosan, it was further purified by forming the iodine-iodide complex, which after precipitation with half saturated ammonium sulfate (3) was decomposed with silver nitrate. This procedure yielded an amorphous white polysaccharide which was soluble in water and formamide and possessed a specific rotation of [a]:’ = + 185”. An aqueous solution of the purified starch polysaccharide produced a pure blue color with the iodine-iodide reagent. Elementary

Molecular Cloning and Analysis of Two Flowering Related Genes from Apple (Malus × domestica)

Apple (Malus×domestica Borkh.) is the fourth fruit in importance and Iran ranks fifth in apple production in the world. Longevity of juvenility in apple extends breeding cycles and makes its breeding a tough job. To alleviate this barrier via genetic engineering, the genes involved in flowering and floral development of apple and their function must be identified and characterized. Most of thes...

Effect of crop load on fruiting and leaf photosynthesis of 'Braeburn'/M.26 apple trees.

Four-year-old apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) trees cv. 'Braeburn' on M.26 rootstock were thinned at full bloom to establish six crop loads ranging from a heavy crop to a deflowered treatment. At harvest, mean yield per tree varied from 0 to 38 kg and mean fruit weight ranged from 225 g in the heaviest cropping treatment to 385 g in the lightest cropping treatment. Light cropping resulted in a...

Evaluation of antioxidant activity of Malus domestica fruit extract from Kashan area

Objective: Antioxidants are considered as the main factors in the inhibition of unwanted oxidation reactions. Materials and Methods: In this research the antioxidant potential of the fresh fruits of 4 cultivars (A to D) of Malus domestica (M. domestica) cultivated in the Kashan, Qamsar area was evaluated. The antioxidant activity of the samples were evaluated using two complementary antioxidant...

Leaf responses of micropropagated apple plants to water stress: nonstructural carbohydrate composition and regulatory role of metabolic enzymes.

We examined changes in nonstructural carbohydrate biosynthesis and activities of related enzymes in leaves of micropropagated apple plants (Malus domestica Borkh. cv. 'NaganoFuji') in response to water stress, with particular emphasis on the enzymes associated with sorbitol, sucrose and starch metabolism. Water stress resulted in the accumulation of photosynthates in leaves, mainly sorbitol, su...
